Is Texting While Driving Becoming a Distracted Driving Epidemic?

distracted driving epidemicTexting while driving is one of the most dangerous things that a driver can do. Even though it is illegal in many states, drivers tempt fate all too often by engaging in this risky behavior.

How Many Accidents are There?

Seventy-seven percent of teens and young adults report being “very confident” of their ability to continue driving while texting. They spend 10 percent of their time in the wrong lane or on the wrong side of the road, however. There are 1.3 million accidents as a result of distracted driving each year, and a large number of those are because of texting while driving.

How Many People Actually Get Hurt and/or Killed?

A National Safety Council study showed that texting while driving was six times worse for distraction than drinking and driving. Eleven teens die each day because they do not acknowledge the danger of texting while driving, and the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis estimates 330,000 injuries of people of all ages each year because of texting on the road.

What is Being Done?

Thirty-nine states and the District of Columbia have already banned hand-held cellphone use behind the wheel, but 800,000 drivers across the country are texting behind the wheel at any given time. Several intellectual centers that study the types of data have suggested different solutions, including:
  • Cell phone jammers that go on inside a car when the motor is running
  • Mandating Bluetooth or other hands-free options inside cars
  • Self-braking technology in cars that kicks in if a driver does not notice an obstacle in front of the car
