Shattered Dreams Program Aims to Reduce Distracted Driving Accidents in Florida

texting while drivingDistracted driving continues to be a leading cause of teenage deaths. In fact, the Shattered Dreams presentation has revealed that teen drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a car accident resulting in fatalities, compared to adults. The Shattered Dreams program believes that texting while driving is a large reason for this statistic.

The Shattered Dreams Program

This program was established sixteen years ago by St. Mary’s Hospital. The program was established to educate students about the risks of distracted driving. Organizers for the program use a multimedia presentation to help explain the dangers of distracted driving. Medical professionals including homicide investigators also discuss issues related to texting while driving. For example, the homicide investigator discusses how a vehicle can become a dangerous deadly weapon when used improperly.

Understanding the True Costs of a Unsafe Driving

Part of the Shattered Dreams Program revolves around guest speakers telling students about the financial consequences of a vehicular homicide or DUI can result. Victims and their families may seek legal redress from students’ parents because parents agree to responsibility when their children receive their driver’s license. One guest speaker talked about receiving a DUI conviction and its impact on her life. She talked about her inability to acquire a license since the conviction. She also discussed her need to quit school and return to her parent’s home. Furthermore, she estimated that the total cost of the ordeal was $16,500.

Evidence of Consequences

Students went to a football stadium after they watched the multimedia presentation. The sheriff’s office and fire department collaborated to make a grisly scene filled with mangled vehicles, smoky vapor and student actors playing the role of injury victims. Volunteers then demonstrated how a drunk driver would go through the process of participating in a sobriety test and ultimately being arrested. Trapped victims from the school’s drama department tried to free themselves from the vehicles while a medical helicopter arrived to transport victims to the hospital. One student was taken away in a body bag. The program finished with the organizers reminding students that accidents of this nature can easily be prevented.
